Summer Games Done Quick has had to be postponed, but the organisers have announced a coronavirus charity marathon.
With some of the industry’s biggest events, like E3, being cancelled because of the coronavirus, it comes as no surprise that Summer Games Done Quick, a yearly charity event, has had to be postponed.
However, in lieu of this, the organisers are holding Corona Relief Done Quick, an online marathon that will run throughout the weekend, starting today, to help raise money for Direct Relief, a charity that provides humanitarian aid for those affected by poverty or emergencies.
For those who don’t know, Games Done Quick regularly holds events where speedrunners come together to complete select games as quickly as possible.
Usually, these events are held live, but Corona Relief Done Quick will be streamed online. During each segment, a host and speedrunner will take over with a new game, with the host in charge of reading out donations from the viewers.
The full schedule can be found here and includes a wide variety of games, from old classics like Donkey Kong Country to more modern releases, like the recently released Doom Eternal.
Most of the runs will be focused on simply clearing the game, but some will have special stipulations. For example, the Kirby Star Allies run will be done not with Kirby but the Mage Sisters, the game’s main antagonists that were recently made playable as free DLC.
There will also be a Super Mario Sunshine race where two players will compete to see who can get all 120 Shine Sprites first (how fitting considering that game’s final boss takes place on Corona Mountain).
As for Summer Games Done Quick, it does already have a new date. The plan is to now hold it on 16 – 23 August, though that could possibly change again if the current situation hasn’t calmed down by then.
Corona Relief Done Quick will take place from 17 – 19 April.
