Xbox needs to stop being so American – Reader’s Feature

Xbox Series X with American flag skin
Does Microsoft need to get out of its comfort zone? (pic: Skinit)

A reader argues that Microsoft is still yet to shed their ShooterBox image and their recent developer acquisitions are too focused on US companies.

According to their recent financial results things are going pretty well for Xbox this generation. They’re cheating a bit by not revealing the big loss they’re undoubtedly making on Game Pass, but no one can deny that the Xbox Series X is a vastly more appealing console than the Xbox One was at launch, even with no games.

They’re obviously aware of that game problem and, as everyone is well aware, have been buying up developers left, right, and centre to make up for their lack of first party studios, including the whole of Bethesda and all their individual developers.

So let’s take a look at the studios Microsoft own right now and the games they’re making, organised by country:

North America:
343 Industries: Halo Infinite (shooter)
The Coalition: Gears Of War (shooter)
Compulsion Games: unknown – last game was We Happy Few (survival game)
Double Fine Productions: Psychonauts 2 (3D platformer)
The Initiative: Perfect Dark (shooter)
inXile Entertainment: unknown – last game was Wasteland 3 (role-playing game)
Obsidian Entertainment: Avowed (role-playing game)
Turn 10 Studios: Forza Motorsport (racing sim)
Undead Labs: State Of Decay 3 (survival game)
Bethesda Game Studios: Starfield (role-playing game)
id Software: unknown – last game was Doom Eternal (shooter)

UK:
Ninja Theory: Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (action adventure)
Playground Games: Fable (role-playing game)
Rare: Everwild (unknown)

Anywhere else in the world:
Arkane Studios, France and USA: Deathloop (shooter)
MachineGames, Sweden: Indiana Jones game (unknown)
Tango Gameworks, Japan: Ghostwire: Tokyo (action adventure)

I’m sure you can spot a few interesting trends in that list, most obviously that almost all of Microsoft’s developers are based in the US, Canada, or UK. In fact, the only ones that aren’t are the ones owned by Bethesda, who Microsoft got as a job lot whether they wanted them or not.

They’ve made zero effort to acquire or partner with anyone in Europe or Japan off their own back and the fact that they’re so American-centric has been so blindly obvious for so long I felt sure they’d start to try and compensate – knowing them probably overcompensate. I imagined them making deals with South American, Indian, Middle Eastern, and other developers (they do exist!) to prove that they do care about being a global company, but no.

What’s even worse is that not only have they doubled down on the American studios, but they’ve convinced Sony to do the same. The closure of Sony Japan Studio was a horrible symbolic event, no matter how much practical difference it makes. Where once one of Sony’s major advantages over Microsoft was their global appeal and worldwide network of developers they now seem to be actively trying to shrink it.

But what else can we see from the list? Well, there’s the fact that Microsoft studios make a lot of shooters and role-playing games, in fact they make almost nothing else. Ever since it started the Xbox has been characterised as the ShooterBox. That’s never been literally true, that’s obviously not the only kind of game that appears on it, but it feels that way.

The nickname encapsulates the whole tone of the console: loud, violent, and garish. One that has never made any effort to appear as anything else and is seemingly uninterested in engaging with other gaming cultures from around the world.

I’m not suggesting that Xbox consoles are bad or that Microsoft don’t make any good games – I owned an Xbox 360 like everyone else and consider it one of the best consoles of all time – but they never seem willing or able to get out of their, admittedly fairly large, niche.

Most people assume the Xbox 360 won its generation but it didn’t, the PlayStation 3 won in the end, simply because Xbox is only popular in North America and the UK. That’s the obvious reason why Microsoft concentrate on studios from those countries but the more they do it the harder they make it to convince people from anywhere else that they’ve shed the ShooterBox attitude.

The other interesting thing in that list is that the games that seem to be the most unusual and difficult to pigeonhole are the ones from the external Bethesda studios. Deathloop is a shooter but it seems to be a very weird and imaginative one, just as you’d expect from the makers of Dishonored. And to be honest I’ve no idea what Ghostwire: Tokyo is, other than it’s not like anything else, and maybe it’s just me but I see that as a positive.

Microsoft needs to break away from tired old franchises like Halo and Gears Of War, not to mention ones that were never any good in the first place, like Fable and State Of Decay. Make new and interesting and unpredictable things. Take advantage of the fact that Sony seems to be getting more conservative and formulaic by being the opposite. And most importantly, stop trying to appeal solely to your home crowd.

Imagine a console where all the games were Japanese, it’d be awful. There’d end up being loads of games that were very similar to each other and tonally there’d be far too much overlap because they’d all be produced by people using the same cultural touchstones. You don’t want just games from one country or another you want a mix. That’s something Microsoft has never seemed to understand and while I used to think Sony did, I’m not so sure anymore.

That variety is the spice of live is the oldest and truest cliché out there and I’m worried that both consoles are ignoring it.

Weekend Hot Topic, part 1: What would be your dream fighting game?

Weekend Hot Topic, part 1: What would be your dream fighting game?
Star Wars: Masters Of Teräs Käsi cover
Worth another try? (pic: Lucasfilm Games)

Readers try to imagine a brand new fighting game featuring their favourite characters, from The Simpsons to Harry Potter.

The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Watson, who asked if you could create a fighting game featuring existing characters from another game, film, TV show, or comic what would it be and how would it work?

There were plenty of imaginative suggestions, with superhero crossovers being especially popular, but most admitted they were unlikely to happen – if not for licensing reasons then because the chosen developer would never be involved.

Teräs Käsi strikes back
I know this didn’t go well the last time they tried it but I’d love to see a big budget Star Wars fighter. The problem with Masters Of Teräs Käsi is that it was really only based on the original trilogy and having Han Solo or Princess Leia fight Darth Vader just doesn’t make any sense. But now we have a lot more Star Wars content around there are more than enough skilled hand-to-hand fighters that you could make some really interesting match-ups.

You can have all the Jedi, like Luke, Obi-Wan, Ashoka, Ezra, and Rey. Then all the bad guys like Vader, Maul, Count Dooku, Kylo Ren, General Grievous, and Ventress. That’s already a good line-up, then just add in non-Force users that could still put up a fight, like Mando, Boba Fett, Bo-Katan, a Darktrooper, and maybe a few bounty hunters.

As for the story, who cares? (That’s certainly the attitude they took with Rise of Skywalker!) Just say it’s Rey using a hologram training program or something, job done.
Carnby

Super PlayStation Bros.
Personally, I’d love to see Sony give the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale concept (i.e. Smash Bros. knock-off) another go. Don’t literally make it a sequel, because the way the original worked, with only super moves counting as a score, was dumb but the basic concept of Smash Bros. but with PlayStation games would be great.

Sony have a lot more characters they could use now too, like Ellie, Aloy, whoever it is in Returnal, and the new Ratchet & Clank character. Throw in Bloodborne, that idiot biker guy from Days Gone, and maybe even Spidey and you could have a great game.

I’d imagine they don’t want to do it because they already failed once and they’d be embarrassed to do it again but them and Capcom are really the only companies that could do it. I mean, who would be in the Xbox one? Master Chief and some Gears Of War beefcakes, and… Ori?
Ansel

Wizard idea
Unless I’m forgetting one, or it was a mobile game or something, I don’t think they’ve eve really done anything with Harry Potter and wizards fighting with wands/magic. In the movies they’re like a cross between a cowboy showdown and a Jedi fight so there’s plenty to work with there, with all the different spells and different kinds of wands.

You’ve obviously got lots of different characters too, the only problem being that most of them look kind of similar in terms of costumes. That’s less of a problem with today’s graphics though, where it’s easier to show who everyone is, so I’d really like to see some kind of one-on-one wizarding duel simulator.

It couldn’t be a straight fighter but increase the distance between players and I can still see it working with fairly tradition controls.

All Marvel, all the time
I know everyone loves Marvel Vs. Capcom but if they do get the licence back I’d actually rather they go back and do the non-crossover games again. X-Men: Children Of The Atom and Marvel Super Heroes are two of my favourite 2D fighters and I’d much rather see a sequel to them than Street Fighter 6.

Apart from the modernisation of the graphics you can add a whole bunch of new characters and take advantage of all the gameplay gimmicks and extras they’ve been added into Street Fighter over the years. I’m kind of surprised Capcom never did it when they did have the licence but then Marvel can be very funny about that sort of thing, so who knows what sort of restrictions they were under.
Phobos

Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo vs. Bart
Someone mentioned bringing back The Simpsons beat ‘em-up recently but this Hot Topic made me think that a one-on-one fighter would make much more sense. What you need for a fighter is big, bold fighters that are instantly recognisable and have strong personalities. The Simpsons has that in spades, whether the characters are meant to be good at fighting or not.

Now I think of it I’m surprised this has never been attempted before, but all I can remember is that terrible wrestling game, which isn’t really the same thing. Obviously it’d be better if Capcom or Arc System Works did it but it’d have to be someone that understood the characters as well as just being good at making a fighter. Part of the magic of Smash Bros. is that Nintendo seems to understand third party characters better than the people that own them.
Guy Martin

Unfulfilled Fantasy
I guess this isn’t going to happen because Dissidia is already a thing, but Dissidia is rubbish so I’d like to see an actually decent Final Fantasy fighting game. A traditional one-on-one fighter where you can actually see the person you’re fighting and the graphics are good.

This is such an obvious idea to me I assume the reason it’s not happened is because Square Enix have something against it and have specifically told no-one to do it. I’m not sure what but I’d sure like to watch Cloud punch Tidus in the face.
Yolab

Do it yourself
This is a timely Hot Topic for me because about a month ago I downloaded Soulcalibur 6 and have spent a good chunk of time since then having great fun with the character creation section.

At first I stuck with copies of superheroes, and I don’t mind confessing to a certain amount of pride in my facsimiles of Blade, Dora Milaje, and Wonder Woman (less so my frankly rubbish version of Iron Man), before moving on to older, more literary characters such as Edmond Dantes, D’Artagnan, and Zorro, and then legendary historical figures such as Robin Hood (complete with Merry Men), King Arthur, and Sir Lancelot.

I’m pleased with my efforts so far, but as great as the creation tool is it’s obviously limited to existing move-sets from the pre-established, exclusively weapon-wielding roster and as such my cast never feels truly my own. Still, pitting Friar Tuck against World War Hulk hasn’t got old just yet.

But as for a dream line-up properly done, being a big fan of the Warren Ellis created comic book The Authority I’d love to see this group feature in a line-up somehow. Since they’re like a more brutal Justice League (think Justice Lords) they’d work well as DLC in a Mortal Kombat game.

I’ve had enough with Batman vs. Superman now (not that I wanted it in the first place…) what I really want to see is Apollo pitched against Midnighter.
Andrew Wright

My 8 video game wishes for 2021 – Reader’s Feature

GTA Online screenshot
Is GTA 6 ever going to happen? (pic: Rockstar Games)

A reader makes a list of the announcements he’d most want to hear this year, from confirmation of the Switch Pro to GTA 6.

We’ve had a bit of a quiet year so far and with a number of high-profile delays, 2021 could turn out to be a bit of a let-down. With that in mind here are some of my hopes for the rest of the year, though I accept this list is likely pure fantasy. I should’ve probably written this at the beginning of the year but hey ho, never mind.

1. Nintendo officially announce the Switch Pro

As someone who plays the Switch almost exclusively in handheld mode, I can’t say I’m altogether excited about rumours of 4K and ray-tracing. I’ve got my PlayStation 5 for all that fancy stuff, however I’ve pretty much accepted the Switch Pro will happen soon. What might make me sit up and take notice is a slightly bigger screen with a higher resolution, for people like myself that are unlikely to benefit from docked mode. It would also be great if the screen had some anti-glare technology. Playing whilst sat outside on a sunny day, with a nice cold beer, would be amazing but I just can’t see the screen, even sat in the shade, on the current model.

A price point of less than £350 would also be great, as I don’t think I could justify spending much more, even taking into account trading in or selling my current Switch.

2. Nintendo announce more Zelda/Mario ports

Staying with Nintendo, as someone who hasn’t played much of their back catalogue I’ve benefitted from a number of remasters such as Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Mario 3D World, etc. However, I would like Nintendo to announce two particular games, these are Zelda: The Wind Waker and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Playing Super Mario 3D All-Stars last year, I could appreciate the high esteem in which Super Mario Galaxy is held. It was, for me, by far the standout game of the collection. This has made me want to play the sequel even more, since many consider it the best Mario game ever made. I hope we get it as a paid DLC or as a standalone title.

The Wind Waker is also a game I would like to try. Ever since completing Breath Of The Wild I’ve wanted to try other Zelda titles. I’m not sure however about the upcoming Skyward Sword. I know it seems to be less well thought of and to me it doesn’t look as interesting as other Zelda games. However, I’m very taken by the art style of The Wind Waker. The world looks bright, colourful and fun to explore.
I’ve considered trying to get an old Wii or Wii U but am holding out to see if either game, or access to the back catalogue of games, will be announced soon.

3. Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 to release in 2021

Last bit of (hopeful) Nintendo news and that’s for the release and gameplay footage of Breath Of The Wild 2. I know long term Zelda fans want the game to feature traditional Zelda dungeon gameplay. Personally, I would be OK with that as long as we still gets the shrines, which in my view was one of the best bits of Breath Of The Wild. Just less dodgy motion control ones, please.

4. New God Of War coming 2021

This isn’t one I’m holding out much hope for. If I’m not mistaken it was slated for a 2021 release but frankly I’m expecting this one to be delayed before long. Let’s hope I’m wrong and we get some actual footage soon. I’m not sure what the game will entail, I imagine much of the same perhaps with an older Atreus as a playable character. I hope it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive, I don’t want to deprive PlayStation 4 owners but it would be great to see how they use the new hardware without the confines of having to worry if it will run on last gen consoles.

5. PlayStation VR 2

As a PlayStation VR owner I have mixed feelings about the current hardware. The only game I have managed to play to completion is Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. There’s some games, such as Vader Immortal and Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners I want to try but I think the current hardware will make for a disappointing experience.

The last VR game I bought was Iron Man VR, but I ended up trading it in very quickly as I just couldn’t enjoy it due to the imprecise nature of the Move controllers, which I have since traded in and will now stick to games that don’t require them.

I’m trying to play Moss since it is now free to play but even that is giving me issues tracking the DualShock controller. Upgraded hardware could breathe new life into already existing titles.

Hopefully Sony will give some more details of when PlayStation VR 2 will launch. I’m hoping for a wireless headset in addition to the upgraded controls and some killer games. Astro Bot 2 and Half-Life: Alyx would both be massive.

6. PlayStation Plus/Play at Home

Xbox obviously has Game Pass but I also think PS Plus has proven great value for money in the last few months, with high profile games such as Control: Ultimate Edition, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Oddworld: Soulstorm all joining the service. Not to mention Horizon Zero Dawn, Astro Bot, and other smaller indie games on the Play at Home initiative.

However, I hope Sony announce more high-profile content coming to both services in the coming months. Also, whilst I understand Microsoft have more resources in order to make first party content available on day one via Game Pass, Sony could always counteract this in other ways. Perhaps PS Plus users could get a heavy discount on these games, or that first party games come to the service after a period of say 12 months of being available at full price.

7. Grand Theft Auto 6

I mean, what is there to say really? GTA 5 is now nearly eight-years-old and remains one of the few games I have beaten to 100% completion. I have no interest in the online element of the game, so I wish that Rockstar at least give us a glimmer of hope that they have at least started work on a sequel.
However, part of me fears that the continuing popularity of GTA Online, and with the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X due for release later in the year we might be years away from GTA 6.

8. Microsoft up their game

What Microsoft are doing with Game Pass is great and commendable and I hope Sony is taking note. Whilst Game Pass obviously has the bigger selection of games I actually would say that the PlayStation Plus Collection for the PlayStation 5 has the better games.

Though I am more a fan of Sony and Nintendo, as for me they have by far the better exclusive games, I’m not blindly loyal and I’ll go where the games are.

I could be tempted by an Xbox Series X or S, especially by spreading the cost via the Xbox All Access package. However, at the moment I don’t see the point. For me Microsoft need to announce new content. Forza Horizon was one the last generational Xbox games I enjoyed and would definitely sit up and take notice if they announced an imminent release date. Another Fable game might also peak my interest.

For me Microsoft need to give firm release dates and soon. So far, unless I’m mistaken The Medium is the only exclusive that’s been out since the new console was released and it wasn’t very well received [it also wasn’t published by Microsoft – GC] and Halo Infinite is the only significant AAA exclusive with a possible release date of 2021. Unless Halo Infinite gets stellar reviews I’m not particularly interested and from what I can tell even diehard Halo fans have been underwhelmed by recent entries in the franchise.

So come on Microsoft, release some quality exclusive content and soon. Microsoft firing on all fronts is great not only for Xbox fans but the gaming community as a whole.

Cyberpunk 2077 CEOs getting big bonuses despite the rough launch

Cyberpunk 2077 Keanu Reeves screenshot
That’s a pretty handsome pay-out for a bunch of people that pushed out an unfinished product (pic: CD Projekt)

Another report into CD Projekt and Cyberpunk 2077 reveals that the higher-ups will still be earning millions of dollars in bonuses.

In the wake of Cyberpunk 2077’s messy launch, CD Projekt told employees that they would receive full bonuses regardless of the game’s critical reception. Considering said bonuses were previously tied to its Metacritic score, and the game was critically panned at launch (especially on consoles), this only seemed like good news.

However, a new Bloomberg report states that not only are these bonuses lower than expected, but the bonuses for CD Projekt’s executives are in the millions. On top of that, the bonuses for staff could have actually been bigger had Cyberpunk 2077 been delayed past December, something upper management ultimately chose not to do.

Since a delay would have meant more time to iron out the infamous bugs and glitches, the game could have theoretically sold more copies, which would have meant a higher profit and, in turn, bigger bonuses for the staff.

20% of CD Projekt’s annual earnings goes towards bonuses, with 10% given to employees and the other 10% given to the board. Some employees who spoke to Bloomberg said that their bonuses ranged from about $5,000 to $9,000 (somewhere from £3,600 and £6,500). Senior employees’ bonuses ranged from somewhere around $15,000 to $20,000 (roughly £10,800 to £14,500).

CEOs Yet Iwiński and Adam Kiciński, meanwhile, are set to receive bonuses of $6.3 million (about £4.6 million). Director Adam Badowski, who is also on the board, will receive $4.2 million (just over £3 million).

Kiciński was asked during a recent investor call if it was appropriate for executives to receive such hefty bonuses, to which he replied, ‘It has always been like this’.

‘When there are results, we get bonuses – those are the contracts we have – and that’s all I can say at the moment.’

From a financial perspective, Cyberpunk 2077 is something of a contradiction. While it did still sell outstandingly well, smashing sales records and the company reporting an overall net profit for 2020, the 13 million copies sold within the first 10 days was apparently less than expected.

The disparity between wages for CEOs and their employees is nothing new, especially in the games industry. Activision’s investors have been complaining that its CEO, Bobby Kotick, has been earning too much money for a while, with him recently taking a substantial pay cut (not that it’s made much of a difference).

On the plus side, CD Projekt has been re-evaluating salaries and has even increased wages for previously lower-paid positions as part of a wider effort to keep staff from leaving.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are expected to launch by the end of the year.

Battlefield 6 leaker adds day to night cycle and dynamic weather to list of features

Battlefield 1 - has DICE finally made a story worth telling?
We’re running out of Battlefield 5 pics so here’s one from Battlefield 1 instead (Pic: EA)

Battlefield’s most reliable leaker has shared more details about this year’s new game, such as a day/night cycle and dynamic weather.

Another week, another Battlefield leak. While fans probably don’t have much longer to wait for EA to actually announce this year’s entry (unofficially referred to as Battlefield 6), insider Tom Henderson has shared a bunch of information ahead of it.

Henderson recently held an hour and a half long livestream to discuss the leaks, with the information he shared handily compiled on Reddit. Some of it was things he’d already claimed before, like the return of levolution, but there were some interesting new titbits as well.

Firstly, all maps will have a day/night cycle, meaning it’s possible for a match to begin in daylight and transition to night-time, which could lead to players needing to adapt and alter strategies on the fly.

Secondly, there will be a dynamic weather cycle as well. Henderson even describes the reveal trailer, saying that it starts off with sunny weather and ends with rain, which sounds like a demonstration of the cycle in action.

Assuming his info is accurate, features like this would certainly help Battlefield differentiate itself from the current Call Of Duty games, aka its main competition.

Speaking of Call Of Duty, Battlefield apparently won’t have the same kind of skill-based matchmaking used for online play. This could be good news for those who dislike how matchmaking works in the Call Of Duty games, with Henderson adding that he thinks Battlefield could attract a lot of the Call Of Duty community.

While none of this can be taken as fact, Henderson is considered a reliable source of information. Not least because his original Twitter account was suspended and, although it was never confirmed, the general consensus is that EA was responsible, which only makes his claims seem more believable.

One thing EA and DICE managed to keep completely under wraps was the existence of a Battlefield mobile game. It will be completely separate to the console/PC release and is scheduled to release in 2022.

Battlefield is expected to release for unspecified consoles and PC later this year.

Printing out New Pokémon Snap photos with the Instax Mini Link printer

Printing out New Pokémon Snap photos with the Instax Mini Link printer

The spirit of the Game Boy Printer lives on (pic: Metro.co.uk)

New Pokémon Snap is out today and so too is an app that allows you to print out any screenshot from the Nintendo Switch.

After a wait of over two decades the sequel to Pokémon Snap is finally released this week but it’s not just the world of gaming that has changed a lot in that time, but also of photography and printing.

Back when the original game came out you could, if you were in America, go to a branch of Blockbusters and print out your photos from a special kiosk. But that’s something that’s obviously not going to happen today, and not just because Blockbusters doesn’t exist anymore.

There is an alternative though, as Nintendo has done a deal with Fujifilm for a special app that works with the Instax Mini Link printer, which is primarily designed for smartphones, and allows it to connect with the Switch.

Back in the day, Nintendo made their own printer, with the one for the original Game Boy designed to work alongside the Game Boy Camera and a few dozen games.

The Instax mini Link looks surprisingly similar to that old device, except it prints out high quality colour images that are about the size of a credit card.

There’s a specific app that works with the Nintendo Switch and although the Instax only advertises New Pokémon Snap, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario 3D World as working with it you can actually use any screenshot saved into the Switch’s album.

Instax Mini Link printer
The printer also works with smartphones (pic: Metro.co.uk)

All you need to do is click the upload option, use the app to scan a QR code that’s generated on the TV, and the screenshot will magically appear on your phone.

From there you can simply print it out via the printer or there are some special Pokémon Snap themed frames you can add, as welling as editing tools to zoom or crop as you see fit.

If you want the full New Pokémon Snap experience then it’s a welcome set of options, although at around £110 for the printer you’re probably best to try and seek out someone that already has one, rather get it just for the Switch.

Or you could wait until the one with the special Pikachu-shaped case is released in the UK later this year.

Either way, we’re proud enough of our Animal Crossing village that we’re going to stick a few of these photos on the fridge…

Hitman dev working on Xbox exclusive RPG with dragons claim multiple sources

Hitman 3 key art
From assassins and spies to… dragons? (pic: IO Interactive)

IO Interactive could be making its own fantasy RPG, but it’s apparently still in the prototype stage of development.

As well as post-launch DLC for Hitman 3 and its James Bond project, IO Interactive is working on a brand new game as well. But instead of assassins or secret agents, it will apparently involve dragons.

According to a report from Windows Central, the studio is in talks with Microsoft to make a fantasy role-playing game for Xbox, currently codenamed Project Dragon and assumed to be an exclusive.

The project is still in very early development, so things could change, but it’s described as being incredibly ambitious, featuring an interconnected world and possibly multiplayer functionality. This is hinted at by multiple job listings that specifically relate to multiplayer for an unannounced project.

Eurogamer claims to have heard the same thing from its own sources, saying that it will be a triple-A game set in a large medieval-like world and have the aforementioned dragons.

It’s not clear if this Project Dragon is one of the four Xbox projects that Windows Central discussed beforehand. One of them, only referred to as Cyclone, sounds an awful lot like Project Dragon in that it has multiplayer and an ‘ambitious connected world.’

They’re probably not the same thing though, and not just because of the different codenames. Cyclone is apparently quite far into its development (with it even potentially being revealed this year) but Project Dragon could be one of the other three.

At the very least, IO does have a third, all new franchise in the works. Aside from the job listings, CEO Haka Abrak said so himself in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, while discussing the developer’s newly opened third studio in Barcelona.

‘Without going into too much detail, we have a third universe that we’re working actively on, which is a bit different and absolutely a love child. It is something our core people, our veteran staff, have been dreaming about for some time.’

Interestingly enough, before it made its first game, Hitman: Codename 47, IO had initially come up with a fantasy multiplayer game called Rex Dominus. But staff at Nordisk Film (which IO was partnered with at the time) asked that it stop development and focus on making a simple shooter instead, according to an interview with Retro Gamer from 2018.

Could IO be returning to that idea after 20+ years? It’s not impossible, but it likely won’t share any official details on this third project for a while, especially when so little is known about the James Bond game as well.

Singing Lady Dimitrescu puppet is latest Resident Evil Village promotion

Great, now we want an Addams Family-like spin-off starring these guys (Pic: Capcom via YouTube)

The musical puppet short to promote Resident Evil Village is far less scary than the game but just as violent and bloody.

Ever since Lady Dimitrescu captured the hearts of Resident Evil fans, and even non-fans, Capcom has doubled down on using her as a major selling point for Resident Evil Village, sharing more details about her (like her exact height) and now making a musical puppet show starring her.

Yes, you read that right. A three-minute short was posted today on YouTube that features puppet versions of Dimitrescu and the three other patriarchs, who will serve as major antagonists in the game. And it is delightfully bizarre.

It’s in Japanese and there are no English subtitles, so we have no idea what they’re saying, but it’s still oddly endearing and even manages to make these characters seem harmless and friendly. At least, at first.

While it lacks the game’s horrific atmosphere and jump scares, it’s no less bloody and violent, with red cloth and tinsel used in place of blood. At one point, the hunchbacked Moreau falls backwards onto a chainsaw, causing a torrent of fake blood to spurt out from him.

Later, Dimitrescu drinks some blood and goes into some kind of rampage, madly swinging an axe (perhaps foreshadowing how she’ll act in the game?) before losing her grip and it comically landing on and embedding itself in Heisenburg’s head.

If Capcom is smart, it’ll make these puppets official merchandise, especially the Dimitrescu one given her popularity. And although it is unlikely, it’d be neat to see them featured in-game. Maybe the short can appear as a hallucination?

Resident Evil Village will be out in only a week’s time, but you can soon try out a new demo for the game, which Capcom will make available for a week starting from tomorrow.

In other recent news, Capcom announced that its new multiplayer spin-off, Resident Evil RE:Verse, has been delayed to the summer, after it was initially advertised as releasing alongside Village.

Resident Evil Village releases on May 7 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.

High expectations and stars in the making: five players to watch at League of Legends MSI 2021

High expectations and stars in the making: five players to watch at League of Legends MSI 2021

The greatest League of Legends teams and players from around the world will soon gather for the Mid Season Invitational (MSI) 2021. But who will leave their mark?

From stardom-bound rookies making their international debuts to world-class players looking to secure their legacies, this is the kind of tournament that every pro wants to be a part of.

MSI 2021 will have plenty of elite talent on display, from the reigning World Champions DWG KIA to the young and explosive squad of MAD Lions – there is a lot to be excited about.

Here are five players who could have a massive impact at this year’s international competition.

MAD Lions – Elyoya

It seems like a good place to start is with Javier ‘Elyoya’ Prades Batalla who was awarded rookie of the split and lifted the LEC trophy in his first-ever season. The Spaniard has had a meteoric rise to fame after competing in Spain’s second division just two years ago.

Now, the rookie is competing in an international tournament for the first time. While he’ll be fully focused on learning as much as possible, there’s no doubt that he is also hoping to announce himself to the world with a strong performance.

Nothing seems to faze him as he recorded more kills and assists as well as the highest kill participation of LEC junglers in the playoffs. Plus, he has shown far more consistency and a larger champion pool than Zhiqiang ‘Shad0w’ Zhao which is a good sign that MAD will fair better than they did in last year’s Worlds Play-Ins.

DWG KIA – Khan

Unsurprisingly, reigning World Champions DWG are heavy favourites heading into MSI after they dominated the LCK playoffs without dropping a single game. Since the organisation’s immense showing at Worlds last year, there’s only one difference in the starting line-up.

Former SK Telecom T1 and FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) top-laner Kim ‘Khan’ Dong-ha has a lot to prove and big shoes to fill after replacing Jang ‘Nuguri’ Ha-gwon. After an impressive career with five LCK titles, the most of any top-laner, there’s no doubt that Khan will be desperate for his first international trophy – especially as he may be retiring at the end of this year due to mandatory military service.

While the Korean pro is well-known to like his aggressive, carry-oriented champions, he has done an excellent job playing weak side as he recorded more assists (47) than any other top-laner in the LCK playoffs. He is extremely solid and consistent which is exactly what DWG needs so they can continue to dominate the map and have full control around dragons.

Cloud9 – Blaber

Another jungler, Cloud9 dominated North America this year and that was largely thanks to Robert ‘Blaber’ Huang whose aggressive style is crucial to the team’s success.

This season, of all junglers in the top five leagues (LEC, LCS, LPL, LCK, and LMS) who have played more than 10 games, Blaber is tied first for the highest average gold difference at 15 minutes (396) this year – putting him in good company with Top Esports’ Hung ‘Karsa’ Hao-Hsuan.

However, that only speaks to his strength compared to those within his region. MSI will be the true test as this will be the first time he competes at an international tournament in sole-possession of the jungle spot – he attended both Worlds 2018 and 2019 as an understudy and occasional substitute to Dennis ‘Svenskeren’ Johnsen.

Royal Never Give Up – GALA

Another young player with an extremely bright future, the highest praise you can give to Chen ‘GALA’ Wei is RNG don’t look like they miss legendary ADC Jian ‘Uzi’ Zi-Hao.

GALA recorded more kills (205) than any other player in the LPL during the regular season and capped off an extraordinary season with a pentakill in the extremely close five-game LPL final against FPX to earn him the MVP award for the series.

This is the first time that GALA has competed in an international tournament, making this MSI a pivotal moment in his career. The 20-year-old will know all too well that the last time RNG competed in an MSI, they won it. He’ll be hoping he can lead the organisation to the trophy just as Uzi did back in 2018.

MAD Lions – Armut

Finally, we have one more MAD Lions player as this really is a massive moment for the team. It will be particularly fascinating to see how İrfan ‘Armut’ Tüke gets on.

The top-laner struggled for a lot of spring. He was making silly mistakes and seemingly struggled to have an impact in the majority of games. However, when he did show up it was game-winning as he secured victories for MAD Lions in a few big games with massive engages. That was the case in the final as his Wukong and Gnar play appeared to be the difference between MAD and Rogue.

On his comfort picks, Armut is an absolute menace and one that cannot be underestimated. The question will be whether he can find consistency and repeatedly make an impact no matter what champion he is playing. Though if he does stick to comfort and it works, teams will be forced to target him with bans which could give MAD a huge advantage when it comes to the drafts.

Crash Bandicoot 5 in doubt as developer placed on Call Of Duty support

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time screenshot
Crash Bandicoot’s comeback seems to have been a surprisingly brief affair (pic: Activision)

Despite a positive announcement from Toys for Bob about working on Call Of Duty, comments from now former staff paint a different picture.

After Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, many were hoping that developer Toys for Bob would also revive the Spyro series with a new game. Instead, it will become another of Activision’s studios helping to support development on Call Of Duty: Warzone.

Toys for Bob itself made the announcement via Twitter, writing that it ‘is proud to support development for Season 3 of Call of Duty: Warzone, and look forward to more to come.’

While the account obviously portrays the news positively, it sounds like the decision has led to several staff members leaving the studio. Nicholas Kole, a character designer and illustrator who worked on both Crash Bandicoot 4 and Spyro Reignited Trilogy, retweeted the news and called it ‘the end of an era.’

He added later that, while the studio itself is still active, everyone he worked alongside with has been let go.

Designer Blake Maloof also announced their departure from the studio, clarifying that they weren’t fired, but the decision only further pushed them into leaving.

Responses on Twitter show plenty of people are worried that this is a sign that Toys for Bob will become a support studio only and not be able to spearhead any projects of their own, despite their work on the Skylanders series showing they have a real aptitude for family friendly titles.

The concerns aren’t completely unfounded. Earlier this year, Activision announced that Vicarious Visions (the studio behind the Crash N. Sane Trilogy and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater remakes) had been merged into Blizzard and will now only help to work on Blizzard’s own games.

Whether the same fate will befall Toys For Bob is hard to say at the moment but given how much money the Call Of Duty franchise makes, and how long Activision intends to keep supporting Warzone, it’s looking likely that the company wants all possible hands on deck to keep the franchise as profitable as it can be.

As for the future of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series, there are some other studios that could potentially helm a future entry. Beenox, for example, developed the Crash Team Racing remake and assisted with development on Crash Bandicoot 4.

The other implication of this news is that there’s not going to be a Crash Bandicoot 5 anytime soon. Although Crash N. Sane Trilogy was a surprise hit Crash Bandicoot 4 did not seem to be nearly as successful, with physical sales 80% less than the remake trilogy in the UK.

That likely paid a significant role in Toys for Bob’s reassignment and may mean that Activision’s most recent experiment with its family friendly franchises is now at an end.
