Classic first person shooter Crysis is making a comeback and it’ll be the first (and possibly only) game to bring ray-tracing to the Switch.
If console owners have heard of Crysis at all it’s probably in the context of knowing that even if they did own a gaming PC it still probably wouldn’t be able to run it at max settings.
But despite being best known for its technical accomplishments the first game was a highly innovative and unusually complex first person shooter, whose more interesting qualities were slowly drained out of its sequels – until the series seemed to fade completely from memory.
There hasn’t been an official announcement yet but a remaster has been rumoured for months and developer Crytek has become the latest in a long line of companies to accidentally leak their own game, with a reference to it, which has now been removed, on their own website.
It’s not just a name check but confirmation that the remaster will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC; along with some of the technical details.
Here’s the full description, which makes references to new graphic features, higher quality textures, and ray-tracing – including on the Switch.
Crysis offers first person shooter fans the best-looking, evolved, and innovative gameplay, enabling players to adapt in real time to survive. Crysis Remastered brings new graphic features, high-quality textures, and the Cryengine’s native hardware- and API-agnostic ray tracing solution for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and – for the very first time – Nintendo Switch
As the description implies, this isn’t the first time the game has been on consoles, as there was also a remaster last generation for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Considering this one is also for the PC it implies a considerable effort is being expended, and you’d assume that if it goes down well then Crysis 4 may well be on the cards.
