Coronavirus: GAME stores remaining open despite government measures

The high street is becoming less and less important to video games

Retailer GAME seems to be ignoring new government measures as it continues to remain open despite the coronavirus.

With most of us receiving advice to remain in our homes due to the coronavirus, it’s a good thing we have video games to help us get through it.

The likes of Blizzard are offering in-game perks for staying indoors but retailers like GAME are continuing to operate, despite new measures from the government.

The government has stated that everyone should employ social distancing to prevent the virus from spreading, but GAME is insisting on remaining open, with some stores tweeting to clarify their opening times.

GAME has decided to temporarily shut down its Belong gaming arenas, however, which were designed so competitive players could meet up and play games together.

‘Although this is extremely disappointing, the welfare of our employees, players and communities is paramount, and we recognise that these new measures help protect that,’ it wrote in a somewhat ironic statement.

Keeping stores open, when even major changes are closing down, seems a dangerous approach for both employees and customers, but last week did see a major increase in video game sales thanks to the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal.

It wasn’t just the new games driving sales though, with evergreen titles such as FIFA 20 and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare seeing an increase of up to 326% – as people got ready to bed down for self-isolation.

GAME is not the only retailer staying open either, with the likes of CeX, Argos, Currys, and Smyths all still open at the time of writing. The common thread connecting all these stores is that they sell video games.

With this seemingly only encouraging people to go outside, it’s very likely that this will only worsen the pandemic and lengthen the amount of time everybody else will need to quarantine.
