Galarian Ponyta is Pokémon Shield exclusive, equivalent to Sirfetch’d

The new regional variation of Ponyta is only in Pokémon Shield, so does that mean that Pokémon Sword still has another exclusive to reveal?

If you watched the 24-livestream of Glimwood Tangle over the weekend you would’ve caught a glimpse of the new variant of Gen I pokémon Ponyta, complete with unicorn horn and colour-changing mane.

It’s one of several variants of existing pokémon that are only found in the new UK-inspired setting of Galar, but what wasn’t clear at the weekend is that Ponyta will only be in Pokémon Shield.

We know that because Japanese mag Famitsu has some official info on the critter, as translated by Serebii.net, which makes it Shield’s equivalent of Sirfetch’d, who is exclusive to Pokémon Sword.

According to Famitsu, Ponyta will have a new move called Pastel Veil, which stops it or its allies from being poisoned and cures allies when they switch in during a battle.

The thing is, Ponyta evolves into Rapidash (who could be heard, but not seen, in the livestream) so technically Shield is getting two new exclusive forms, whereas Sword only has the one.

Or maybe original form Farfetch’d, who hasn’t been seen yet in the new games, will be different in Galar too.

It’s hard to know what developer Game Freak might be thinking, but traditionally every version of a mainline Pokémon has had five or six exclusive pokémon – indeed, that’s the primary reason why there are always two versions, to encourage trading.

The only other Galarian forms that are known about at the moment are the wonderful Victorian-looking version of Weezing and the now more badger-like Zigzagoon, who evolves into Linoone and the brand new Obstagoon – who appears to be a Kiss fan.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be released, only on Nintendo Switch, on 15 November.
